How to negotiate a signing bonus
By Kenny Damgren · a kemero product
A fixed base salary does not always mean the offer is final. A signing bonus can be easier for the other side to approve because it is a one-time cost. It is not the same as permanent salary, so evaluate it separately.
When should I negotiate a signing bonus?
Ask after you know the base salary cannot move enough to meet your target. A signing bonus is most useful when you are giving up a bonus, equity, commission, paid leave, or another cost by changing jobs.
How much signing bonus should I ask for?
- ·Calculate compensation you will leave behind, including a bonus you are likely to earn.
- ·Add direct transition costs, such as relocation or a required move.
- ·State one specific amount.
- ·Keep your request tied to a real gap in the offer.
- ·Do not treat a one-time bonus as equal to a lower base every year.
Use this when the other side says base salary is fixed.
They say: “We do not have room to increase the base salary.”
You say · “I understand. The base is below my target, and I am also leaving a $15,000 annual bonus at my current company. Could we bridge part of that gap with a $12,000 signing bonus?”
They say: “We may have some flexibility there.”
You say · “Thank you. Please also send the repayment terms so I can review the full offer.”
What signing bonus terms should I check?
| Term | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Payment date | Is it paid on the start date, after 30 days, or later? |
| Repayment | Do I repay all or part if I leave, and for how long? |
| Taxes | Is the stated amount gross pay before withholding? |
| Written terms | Will the amount and conditions appear in the offer letter? |
Subject: Offer follow-up
Thank you again for the offer. I am excited about the role and the team. I understand the base salary is at the top of the approved range. To help close the gap created by compensation I am leaving behind, could we include a $12,000 signing bonus? If that is possible, please share the payment timing and any repayment terms. I look forward to your response.
Before the real call, rehearse your exact amount and your response if the other side offers less. That makes it easier to compare what is on the table.
Common questions
Can I ask for a signing bonus if the salary is non-negotiable?
Yes. A signing bonus is a separate part of compensation and may have more flexibility than base salary.
Do I have to pay back a signing bonus if I quit?
Possibly. Check the written repayment clause, the time period, and whether repayment is prorated.
Should I negotiate salary or signing bonus first?
Negotiate base salary first because it recurs every year. Use a signing bonus to address a gap when base is fixed.
Can a signing bonus replace a low salary?
It can offset a short-term gap, but it does not increase future raises or recurring pay. Compare the full package.
